The shell devlog is on pause — final semester

devlog · Sep 23, 2026

Short update rather than a technical one: the shell devlog is on pause.

My final university semester has started, and with it the senior project. That's the piece of work the whole degree points at, and it deserves the hours I was spending on builtins and completers.

It's called Yalla. I'll write about it properly once there's something worth showing.

The shell got me exactly what I wanted out of it. Three days in and I already understood processes, streams, and the terminal better than any amount of reading had taught me. Days 1 to 3 are still up — the loop and the builtins, redirection, and tab completion — and they stand on their own.

What I'm doing instead

Coursework, the senior project, and a deliberate step sideways from pure Python into more general ground. The shell was a deep, narrow dig into one language and one program. This semester is the opposite shape: broader, more moving parts, more of the stuff you only learn by building something with other people looking at it.

That's a good trade right now. The shell isn't going anywhere — it's on a shelf, not in a bin.

What happens to this log

It keeps going. The shell series pauses; the writing doesn't. Expect posts about whatever the senior project drags me through instead, which is usually where the interesting problems are hiding anyway.

Back to the shell when the semester gives me the room.

keep going

Pausing something on purpose isn't the same as dropping it. The projects you shelve deliberately, with a note about where you stopped, are the ones you can actually pick back up — it's the ones you quietly abandon mid-thought that never get finished. Know why you're putting it down, and it stays yours.
